How does our garden grow?

Around late spring we decided to try our hand at gardening. In high school I took agriculture and did pretty well. Also my mother's side of the family, including her, have very green thumbs. From what I understand my grandmother could grow an apple tree from a slice of apple pie. Well I must have inherited some of that from them. In our front yard we planted some marigold and zinnia seeds. The zinnia's grew higher than our mailbox and in every shade of pink you could imagine. The marigolds did just as well and they were just as colorful. At the same time we decided our backyard needed a splash of color too. We planted tomatoes, pepper, a watermelon, two gardenia bushes and some pretty ground cover. We reaped many tomatoes, which I heard were delicious. Normally I would eat a tomato with just some salt and pepper, but pregnancy has steered me clear of anything healthy. We gave those out to neighbors and some friends at work. The peppers never did too good, I think something ate them. Now we are waiting on the watermelons! The watermelon vine has taken over our backyard. It now extends about 15 from the actual garden. Here are a few pictures of the watermelons in various stages of growth.

After doing a little Internet research on watermelons, I walked outside chose my melon and proceeded to cut it open. I was wrong! :( I should have waited. I still have several more watermelons on the vine. I am going to a few more weeks to try again. Looks like I am growing my own little melon in my belly : )

Until next time, bye y'all!

Well, I guess I can't touch any of the living things in your yard when I come to visit, huh? You may have a green thumb, but can it stand up to my black one?? lol Everything looks great...and yummy! I'm jealous! I was so excited to have some summer squash grow this summer and expected them to be ready when we returned from NC, but unfortunately, one of the puppies decided the garden was the ideal resting spot and all the squash got squished. Bummer. Maybe next time. We grew a watermelon once, too, and it took over the whole yard. Though, I must say, we thought it was pretty cool to see where it would go next! Have fun! :-)
